How to Stay on Your Diet.
By Anne Erasmus
We've all fallen off the wagon before. Staying on a weight loss program or diet plan takes self-discipline and sometimes what seems to be superhuman willpower. Lack of energy, cravings and temptation are huge hurdles to overcome.
Ideally, your weight loss program should be giving you a plan that adapts your eating habits to encourage weight loss, whether by cutting certain foods out, or rearranging how often and what you eat to increase your metabolism - but even the easiest diet is difficult to stick to.
Here are a few ideas to help you stay on the 'straight and slim', some I've found helpful, others are recommended by friends of mine.
-
Create a mental picture of what you want to achieve.
Whether it's a photo of yourself 5 years ago, or that gorgeous dress you can't get into anymore - get a pic, copy it and put it up somewhere to remind you of your goal - a slimmer you! I have a friend who keeps her particular pic in her wallet - she says it prevents her from buying things she shouldn't!
-
Find a Friend
Whether it's a friend in the physical world or online, friends can be hugely beneficial when it comes to moral support and encouragement. Join a few of the many weight loss forums online - there are tons of tricks, tips and supportive people out there!
-
Make a Reward Chart
I know, I know - but it works, and your kids, if you have any, will love the idea! Record all the steps you need to achieve, your goals, your measurements, and when you will get your rewards. Just make sure the rewards are non-fattening - a movie ticket, new book etc.
-
Avoid the Hot-Spots
At the start of your diet, it is better to avoid the temptation areas - the fabulous bakery you walk past to work every day, the icecream parlour and so on. Once in the swing of things, resisting temptation should get easier.
-
List the Pros and Cons
Write a list of all the reasons you want to lose weight - and the good that will come of your weight loss. Everything from fitting into that dress, to not huffing and puffing up the stairs at work, playing ball with the kids - anything positive.
Unless you're already underweight (in which case you should not be reading this), I've yet to think of a 'Con' - but if you've got one please let me know!
When choosing a weight loss program, look for one that is flexible and easy to use. Try to find a program that will be relatively easy to maintain, and can be adapted for maintaining the slimmer you later on.
Good luck!
